I know I yapped about needing space in my last post and I guess the universe must still think I’m cool. At least cool enough to get free stuff…occassionally. So my work upgraded all the storage and hard drives running on our Macs. I guess the old configuration wasn’t ideally setup for backup. Anyways, I got to keep one of the old drives which was still plenty fast and at 300GB, I wasn’t complaining at all. So it looks like I don’t have to get space…I GOT SPACE.
Still on the subject of photographs, I noticed that there were times when I missed having a flash on my camera. The 5D doesn’t have a built in pop-up flash, but I wanted to find one with a compact form factor. I’m not a fan of shooting with an on camera flash (at least not directly matted to the hot-shoe) for a couple of reasons:
1. I like just being able to shoot and just adjusting either my f-stop or ISO to accomodate the lighting conditions. This forces me to not only understand the cameras functions more, but also teaches me to be more creative about subject, position, and light. Plus, it’s digital and digital film is free. I can just chuck away whatever images I think suck.
2. I think it’s more obtrusive to the subjects I shoot when a flash is going off. It’s ok for specific shots and by that I mean those images that are specific to an occasion. The shots that you really got to be sure you have because it would suck for you if it didn’t come through for lack of using your flash. People become more conscious of the lens and less natural.
3. I like being compact and all the flashes I saw were these giant monstrosities that of course are built this way for a specific purpose, whether that be it’s capabilities or it’s power. I see that as a pain to carry around with the style of photographing I like to do.
That all being said, I did pick up a flash that would meet my needs, the SUNPAK RD2000. It’s small, compact and can be tilted for bounce lighting. I can easily remove it when I don’t want to use it and put it away in my pocket. NICE! I’ll mess around with it in SOCAL this weekend and see how it benefits me or if I learn to hate flash even more.
